Office workers, web developers, judges, lawyers, and pilots are at an increased risk for developing varicose veins because their jobs require sitting for long stretches of time. Sitting for hours at a time slows the flow of blood through the body and can increase the likelihood of poor circulation resulting in varicose vein development.
Preventing Varicose Veins
If you’re in a job that puts you at risk for developing varicose veins, you don’t need to quit your job to avoid venous disorder. Taking the following preventative measures can reduce your likelihood of getting varicose veins:
- Take Standing or Sitting Breaks: If your job requires standing all day, try to take a five-minute sitting break every hour to give the veins in your legs a rest. If your job requires sitting all day, take a five-minute walking break every hour.
- Wear Compression Stockings: Compression stockings are tighter-than-normal socks or pantyhose that promote proper blood circulation. Wearing a pair of compression stockings to work each day can help prevent varicose veins from developing.
- Wear Flats More Often Than Heels: High heels keep your calf muscles engaged at all times. However, engaging the calf muscle while walking is one way that your body pulls blood effectively from your feet into your legs. If your calf muscle is engaged at all times, your body loses an efficient method of blood circulation. Instead of wearing heels to work all week, make sure to alternate flats in frequently.
Getting Rid of Varicose Veins for Good
In some cases, no amount of prevention can stop varicose veins from appearing. Some studies show that venous disorder is genetic, so if your parents suffered from varicose veins, you may also develop them even after taking preventative measures.
